Revision Knee Replacement

The patient is a 62-year-old female who had a total knee replacement 5 years ago. Despite initial improvement, she began experiencing persistent pain and swelling in the joint over the last year. Daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and standing for long periods became extremely difficult. Previous treatments, including physiotherapy and medications, were ineffective.

Challenge:

The patient’s previous implant had loosened and there was significant bone loss in the knee. Additionally, the risk of infection was high due to multiple prior surgeries. This made the revision surgery technically demanding, as the surgeon needed to carefully plan the removal of the old implant while preserving as much bone and soft tissue as possible.

Procedure:

The surgery involved removing the failed implant and performing bone grafting to restore the missing bone stock. A custom revision knee implant was then carefully positioned to ensure stability and proper alignment. Throughout the procedure, special attention was paid to the surrounding ligaments and tissues to prevent complications and maintain joint function.

Outcome:

The patient recovered well post-surgery, regaining full mobility within three months. Pain was significantly reduced, allowing her to return to daily activities comfortably. Follow-up assessments showed that the implant was stable, and no complications such as infection or loosening occurred.
